Stating that the president must be a symbol of the national unity, Sitaula opined that the president should be given emergency powers.
“The president would not remain a symbol of the national unity if he is given a share in the executive power,” he added.
Sitaula said the political parties must resolve the contentious issue through more dialogues. “If political parties fail to forge consensus on the system of governance by Monday, the deadline for political understanding should be extended,” he said.
Sitaula warned that the promulgation of the new constitution would be delayed if political parties opted for voting to resolve the contentious issues.
“Promulgation of the new constitution will be assured only if we pass the proposal at least by two-thirds majority,” he opined.
Sitaula said they will not hold discussions on formation of a national consensus government until the peace process concludes. “We will not discuss the issue of consensus government until the peace process concludes,” said Sitaula.
He also reiterated that his party would stake claim to lead the government only after the peace process concludes.
