KATHMANDU, Dec 6: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has expedited negotiations with Sher Bahadur Deuba and his aides to settle the nomination row surrounding the party´s vice president and general secretary.

On Sunday, Koirala held meeting with Deuba at the former´s residence at Maharajgunj. Deuba faction leaders are unhappy with Koirala´s proposal to nominate Ram Chandra Paudel for party vice president and Krishna Prasad Sitaula for general secretary. [break]

Though Gopal Man Shrestha, a Deuba confidant, was also invited for talks he could not make it to the meeting. Shrestha will have a separate meeting with President Koirala on Monday.

The ongoing central working committee meeting of the party was put off indefinitely on Friday following a five-day deliberations on Koirala´s nomination proposal after an overwhelming majority of CWC members -- mostly belonging to Deuba faction -- suggested to the party president to bring the nomination proposal through consensus.

Deuba faction has demanded that it should have proportional representation in the party´s office bearers´ body, parliamentary party board, party departments and the central working committee where the party president nominates 20 members. Deuba faction has been demanding a ´package deal´ on all nominations.

A senior leader close to Deuba said there was no concrete proposal for a package deal from Koirala, Sunday. "Koirala only sought Deuba´s support for his nomination proposal. The president has assured proportional representation in various bodies of the party," added the leader, asking to be unnamed.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Deuba said his meeting with President Koirala was ´positive´. He, however, did not divulge the details.

President Koirala also held consultations with leaders close to him on Sunday to discuss ways to resolve the differences with Deuba faction following the nomination. He will continue consultations on Monday as well.
