BIRATNAGAR, Jan 30: Central member of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) Dr Shekhar Koirala has stressed the need for holding local level elections on time.

Talking to media persons at his residence in Biratnagar on Sunday, Dr Koirala said since periodic elections are a fundamental right of the people in democracy, the election should not be deferred under any pretexts.

He suggested the government directly talk to the Election Commission on the matter of declaring the election date instead of postponing the election by amending acts and laws. "It is better for the government to fix the election date after holding discussion with the Election Commission instead of talking to coalition partners."

In a separate context, Dr Koirala suggested that the party leadership should nominate the senior leaders, who were defeated in the party’s recently-held 14th general convention as party central members.

Insisting that Province 1 should be named through consensus, he viewed that splitting ministries and the increment of the cabinet size would impact good governance of the provincial government. It also should focus on the country's economic situation before expanding the cabinet and act in a transparent, responsible and accountable manner, he said.
