KATHMMANDU, Nov 8: Nepali Congress (NC) on Monday said that it was not going to budge an inch from its earlier stance on peace process, constitution-making and the formation of new government as long as the Maoists do not create credible grounds for concluding the ongoing peace process.

A decision to this effect was made at a meeting of the party´s Central Working Committee held on Monday. [break]The decision came as NC President Sushil Koirala, CWC members Ram Chandra Poudel and Dr Ram Sharan Mahat briefed the CWC meeting about the issues that surfaced in the three-party meeting held at Hattiban and highlighted the differences that cropped up during the meeting with the Maoists.

“NC proposed to hold serious dialogues with the Maoists on issues related to the peace process and to keep the peace process on track. But the Maoists showed not much interest on it. They insisted that there should be Maoist-led government in the first place to accomplish all the tasks related to peace process and constitution-drafting,” Poudel said, talking to media persons after the meeting.

He added, “There is an impression that NC is an stumbling block to peace process and that majority of CWC members have suggested that the party go to people and make them aware about the stances NC has maintained.”

Altogether 15 CWC members including Khum Bahadur Khadka, Sujata Koirala, Dr Minendra Rijal, Aananda Dhungana, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Mahesh Acharya and NP Saud had spoken during the meeting. All of them had pressed that the NC should not change its stance, including the party´s prime ministerial candidacy until the Maoists come clean about their stance on peace process.

On the occasion, some CWC members demanded that talks team of the party be formed through a CWC meeting. Likewise, CWC members also suggested that the party sought clarifications from Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal over his remarks to hand over executive power to the president.

“There were suggestions that the caretaker government could only unveil make-shift budget,” said a CWC member present in the meeting.

The next CWC meeting of the party is slated after Chhat festival.
