KATHMANDU, April 21: Nepali Congress delegation led by acting President Sushil Koirala has informed President Dr Ram Baran Yadav about its strong protest against the government decision to take action against army chief General Rookmangud Katawal. [break]

“As the president is supreme commander of the army and patron of the constitution, we told him that the government action against army chief will derail the peace and constitution-making process,” said NC´s Dr Ram Sharan Mahat after the meeting.

The NC delegates also said the Maoist-led government action came with a clear intention of demoralizing and disintegrating national army. “It is a blatant violation of the Comprehensive Peace Accord and motivated by the Maoists’ political interest,” said Mahat.

In response, the president was reported to have told the NC delegates that he was aware of his constitutional role and would act within the constitutional framework.

The NC team headed directly to the party´s central office for emergency meeting of the party´s Central Working Committee meeting on the issue of Maoist-led government´s action against the army chief. The main opposition party is set to hold meeting of all the political parties except the Maoists to discuss possible consequence of the action.
