KATHMANDU, August 25: The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM), in the last fiscal year, took actions against 19,014 firms and service providers from across the country, who were found cheating their customers by not properly maintaining their measuring devices.


According to the NBSM, it grilled 8,851 firms from the Kathmandu Valley, 1,679 firms from Pokhara, 1,485 firms from Biratnagar, 1,251 firms from Birgunj, 1,167 firms from Janakpur, 1,067 firms from Dhangadhi, 1,064 firms from Butwal, 1,050 firms from Nepalgunj, 845 firms from Jhapa, 409 firms from Surkhet and 174 firms from Silgadhi in the fiscal year 2021/22.

Jyoti Joshi Bhatta, spokesperson for the NBSM, said many firms that faced actions were found either not registering or failing to renew their weighing and measuring devices in the government authorities. According to him, the NBSM filed cases against 33 taxi operators on the charge of tampering with taxi meters to cheat passengers.


In the review period, the NBSM collected revenue worth Rs 71.61 million, including cash penalties, from the business entities.
