KATHMANDU, Sept 26: Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the umbrella organization of law practitioners across the country, has urged the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon to ask Chairman of the Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi to resign as chief justice.

Regmi flew to New York to attend the 68th UN general assembly on Thursday. NBA has requested Ban to raise concerns with Regmi on issues of independence of the judiciary, rule of law and human rights in Nepal.[break]

“We further request you to demand with him to resign as the chief justice so as to ensure independence of the judiciary in Nepal,” reads a statement issued by NBA general secretary Sunil Pokhrel.

NBA, in its letter sent to the UN general secretary, has claimed that after Regmi´s appointment as the chairman of the Interim Election Council, there has been a systematic attack on lawyers, who have always stood for rule of law, independence of the judiciary and human rights in Nepal.
