KATHMANDU, Oct 8: The  Nepal Bar Association has urged the government to take serious action against activities that undermine the morale of the Nepal Police.

In a statement issued by General Secretary Kedar Prasad Koirala, the NBA also urged the government to move forward through dialogue and cooperation. "The government must take these acts that undermine the morale of security forces, especially the Nepal Police, seriously. Passion, anger, and lawlessness lead to murder, violence and revenge," the NBA’s statement said. "We stand for lasting peace, which can only be achieved through dialogue and cooperation. Therefore, we request the Nepal government to initiate broad-based dialogue."

Despite any difficult phase the country may go through, the NBA emphasized that basic standards of the rule of law should never be ignored. The NBA also called for the swift and regular operation of all courts, including the Supreme Court.

Additionally, the NBA requested the government to provide land within the Supreme Court complex for the construction of its own building.

The NBA also expressed its concerns regarding the stance of Gauri Bahadur Karki, the chairman of the commission formed to investigate the incidents during the Gen Z movement on September 8 and the subsequent vandalism, arson and looting on September 9.

"The prior opinion of the chairman has not provided a credible assurance that the commission will maintain impartiality. There is a growing public perception that the government is treating this serious incident as a mere formality, which undermines the seriousness of the investigation. As a result, the commission’s report could lose credibility," the statement concluded.
