Nat'l badminton from April 2

KATHMANDU, March 10: Kathmandu District Badminton Association (KDBA) will host the 36th National Badminton Tournament at the National Sports Council covered hall from April 2 to 7.



KDBA organized a press conference on Sunday and informed that the tournament, being held on the initiative of Nepal Badminton Association, will feature 600 shuttlers from 40 districts and three clubs -- Nepal Police Club, Nepal APF Club and Nepal Army.[break]



The tournament will feature 12 events -- men´s singles, men´s doubles, women´s singles, women´s doubles, mixed doubles, U-16 boys´ and girls´ singles, U-17 boys´ and girls´ doubles, men´s team event, women´s team event and veterans´ (above 45 years) event.



"We have allocated quotas to all the participating districts and clubs," said Deepak Thapa, the president of KDBA. Around 150 officials are expected to participate in the event.



Foreign umpires and observers

According to KDBA, the tournament will also have foreign umpires and observers besides four international umpires from Nepal and other national umpires. Observers and umpires from India, Bangladesh, China, Maldives and Bhutan are to visit Kathmandu during the tournament.



"The number of foreign delegates is yet to be confirmed. This initiative is taken mainly to develop relations with neighboring countries for the development of badminton," said Thapa. "Presence of foreign umpires and observers would give an opportunity to our national umpires to learn," he added.



Sponsorship and support

Sunny Distillery´s product Minsk is the tournament´s sponsor. The expected cost of the tournament is Rs 3.8 million as KDBA has announced to provide lunch to the participants as well as allowances during the tournament.



Likewise, National Sports Council, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Nobel Hospital, NMB Bank, Himalayan Brewery and Sky Cable Network have also financially supported the tournament.



Felicitation

Meanwhile, the tournament organizing committee has decided to felicitate former Nepal champions and other individuals who have contributed to the development of Nepali badminton during the tournament. "It is an initiative to honor senior players," said Thapa. "We hope this initiative establishes a sporting culture," he added.
