KATHMANDU, May 10: The government is set to launch a nationwide special campaign from Monday (tomorrow) aimed at controlling market irregularities, artificial price hikes, and consumer fraud.

The campaign, titled “Price Transparency Week,” is being organized jointly by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.

Press and research advisor to Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Dipa Dahal, said the campaign aims to address rising prices that directly affect people’s daily lives.

She expressed confidence that the week-long drive would serve as a “milestone” in curbing illegal market activities and urged all concerned agencies, civil society groups, and media personnel to actively support the campaign and report market irregularities.

The campaign will begin on Monday and continue until May 17.

According to decisions and official correspondence from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, the Prime Minister’s Office has already instructed relevant bodies across the country to implement the campaign.

Dahal said the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, offices of chief ministers in all provinces, and all 753 local governments have been directed to ensure the campaign’s success.

Under the campaign, every local government will require businesses and service providers within their jurisdiction to maintain visible price lists. Local bodies have also been assigned responsibility for regularly monitoring whether businesses comply with the requirement.

District Administration Offices have been tasked with activating district-level market monitoring committees, conducting awareness campaigns on price transparency, and ensuring market regulation.

Meanwhile, central and provincial market monitoring committees will conduct broader market evaluations, deploy special inspection teams, and initiate strict legal action against those violating regulations.

The government launched the campaign following widespread complaints over inconsistent pricing and consumers being cheated because they were unaware of actual prices.

The main objective of the initiative is to strengthen market monitoring systems and ensure immediate action against violators.

Through the campaign, the government aims to bring greater clarity and transparency to the pricing of goods and services while making traders and service providers more accountable.

Authorities have also placed administrative mechanisms across the country on high alert to enforce mandatory price-list requirements and protect consumer rights.
