KATHMANDU, Jan 7: The final list of voters for the National Assembly member election, scheduled for January 25, will be published today (Sunday). Following today's publication, tomorrow (Monday) will see a program for candidate registration in all seven provinces.

According to the Election Commission (EC), there are 2,047 voters. The list of approved voters was initially released on January 5 at the election officer's office.

If a voter's name is missing from the published list, inclusion is possible. Correcting names, surnames, age, position, etc., can be made, and complaints against voters can be filed by submitting an application to the office of the concerned election officer. The EC has announced that after completing all necessary processes, the final voter list will be published on January 7 (today).

Out of the 20 vacant seats in the National Assembly, elections for 19 seats will be held on January 25, with one member nominated by the President based on the government's recommendation.

Eligible voters for the National Assembly election include members of the seven provincial assemblies, the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities, and the mayors and deputy mayors of municipalities. The total weightage of votes in the election is 57,559. The total weightage of a vote of a provincial assembly member is 53 while it is 19 for each of the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities and mayors and deputy mayors.

Based on this, the total weightage of votes for provincial assembly members will be 2,997, and it will be 28,462 for each of the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities and mayors and deputy mayors.

The total population is divided by the number of voters, and the result is then divided by a thousand to determine the vote weightage.

Since the promulgation of the Constitution of 2072 BS, the National Assembly was formed for the first time in Magh 2074 BS. According to constitutional provisions, 56 people were elected in the 59-member National Assembly, ensuring representation of at least three women, one Dalit, and one person with disabilities or minorities from each province. Additionally, three individuals, including one woman, were nominated by the President based on the Council of Ministers' recommendation.

In the 59-member National Assembly, one-third of the members had a six-year term, another one-third had a four-year term, and the remaining one-third had a two-year term. As one-third of the members are set to leave on March 3 after completing their six-year tenure, the election will be held on January 25 to fill the vacancies.

There is a legal provision to conduct elections in the National Assembly one month before a vacancy occurs. As the National Assembly is never vacant, it is also referred to as the permanent house.
