This shocking revelation was made amid a program organized by the District Development Committee (DDC) under the auspices of UNICEF on Monday in the district headquarters, Gamgadhi.[break]
As per the MDG, 60 percent of the child births should be facilitated by SBAs by 2015 to reduce both child and maternal mortality rates. The survey was conducted on basic sectors such as education, health, drinking water, service delivery and women and children in seven VDCs --Sukadhik, Hyaglu, Kalai, Narthapu, Kimri, Mugu, and Dolfu- does not paint a rosy picture.
The UNICEF and various governmental agencies had jointly launched the survey last year. The Local Development Officer of Mugu, Bharat Gautam, admitted that the survey has pinpointed challenges to meet the MDG goals pertaining to maternal health.
But he was quick to add that it would go a long way to help improve the current situation by devising a new strategy to address the challenges. The survey also shows that not a single pregnant woman ever received an encouragement allowance associated with delivery service at the health centers.
Though 93 percent of the pregnant got their pregnancy tested at the health posts, most of them remained unaware of the risks associated with physically strenuous jobs during pregnancy, the survey further notes.
The situation of the drinking water and sanitation is also not satisfactory. The other areas which need immediate attention include gender equality and child development activities, including the measures to improve their health and education facilities in the district.
