KATHMANDU, Sept 4: The Upendra Yadav-led Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Nepal (MPRF-N) has decided to forge an electoral adjustment with the UCPN (Maoist) in the Tarai constituencies for the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

A senior leader of the party requesting anonymity told Republica that they were closer to the UCPN (Maoist) than Madhes-based parties in terms of agenda. “The proposal for an adjustment with UCPN (Maoist) was endorsed during the party´s four-day central committee (CC) meeting that concluded on Monday,” said the leader. He further added that the proposal was endorsed through a majority. [break]

“We will field candidates in only 60 out of 116 constituencies in the Tarai,” he said, adding that such an adjustment with the UCPN (Maoist) would ensure the party victory in at least 40 constituencies under the First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system.

Asserting that the party would not earn as many seats as expected under the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system, the leader said, “Apart from seats under FPTP, we will get seven percent seats under PR system. This will ensure us a good presence in CA.”

He said MPRF-N would be comfortable forging alliance with UCPN (Maoist) for several reasons. “First, we share similar views with UCPN (Maoist) as Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are conventional parties. Second, it is easier to strike a deal with Pushpa Kamal Dahal as he has a good grip on his party. Third, if we request Sushil Koirala to leave their candidacy from Banke, he would directly turn down our proposal.”

He further said that his party would field candidates in only 30 per cent of the 240 constituencies as a political party that fields candidates in more than 30 per cent seats needs to prepare an inclusive list accommodating all the ethnic, indigenous, religious and various other communities.
