KATHMANDU, June 16: Leaders from Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF) and their supporters have defected from the party and joined the newly-formed Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Republican (MPRF-R).

MPRF Sunsari district chairman SN Mehata joined MPRF-R during the formation of MPRF-R´s district chapter. Sunsari is the home district of MPRF Chairman Upendra Yadav.[break]

´´Yes, I have formally joined MPRF-R as Upendra Yadav tried to ignore the issues of Madhesi people,´´ Kamati told Republica over phone on Wednesday.

Similarly, MPRF Jhapa district chapter chairman Moit Lal Kamati, treasurer Mahendra Bhushan and under-secretary Kailash have joined the Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta-led MPRF-R.

MPRF Rautahat chairman Dr Abdul Shamad and Kapilvastu deputy-chairman Ram Sinha Chaudhary have also joined Gupta´s party.

MPRF´s Dhanusha vice-chairman Surendra Mandal and Bara vice-chairman Binda Yadav are also among those joining MPRF-R.

MPRF-R Chairman Gupta claimed that the trend of MPRF cadres joining his party has been growing right since the day of formation of the party´s district chapters.

´´This is a major blow to MPRF after the split in the party,´´ Gupta said.

However, MPRF Chairman Yadav dismissed Gupta´s claim saying that 99 percent of district leaders are still with the mother party. ´´Some leaders might have joined the party under financial influence as they are being paid Rs 500,000 and a motorcycle each,´´ Yadav told Republica.

Gupta outright rejected the allegation that some leaders had chosen to join his party under financial influence. "It is shameful for him to make such an allegation. He thinks that Madhesi people are just a salable commodity," he added.

Claiming that his party organization is still intact, Yadav said there was good turn out of cadres during the gathering of the party´s leaders and supporters in Tarai districts recently. Worried over the possible loss of the party´s cadres as the formation of MPRF-R district chapters is underway, MPRF is currently busy organizing gatherings of the party leaders in various districts in recent days.

MPRF-R has already formed chapters in Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Jhapa, Sunsari, Dhanusha, Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu, Banke and Kailali in the past two weeks, according to a leader.

Gupta defected along with 13 CA members from MPRF on May 23.
