MP Rai calls for legalization of marijuana cultivation

Rai said marijuana has various medicinal uses and that its cultivation could help curb the rapid outmigration from the country’s hilly districts while creating employment opportunities.

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: CPN-UML lawmaker Rajendra Kumar Rai has called for the legalization of marijuana cultivation in Nepal.



Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, Rai said marijuana cultivation could serve as a basis for economic growth and urged the government to formulate the necessary laws and guidelines to regulate it.

Stating that more than 62 countries around the world are reaping economic benefits from marijuana, he also called for the establishment of marijuana processing centers in Nepal.


Rai said marijuana has various medicinal uses and that its cultivation could help curb the rapid outmigration from the country’s hilly districts while creating employment opportunities.


He noted that Gandaki Province has already introduced laws related to marijuana cultivation and urged the federal government not to delay action on the issue.
