KATHMANDU, Oct. 23: At least 16 people were killed and 32 others injured when a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck China’s remote Tibet region on Thursday, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing local authorities.
More than 300 houses collapsed in the quake, which struck at 10:33 pm on Thursday (1433 GMT). Officials were assessing the damage, while disaster relief operations were underway, Xinhua said.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre was in a mountainous area about 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometres northeast of Lhasa, the regional capital. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
Authorities activated a Level II earthquake disaster emergency response in the affected area, Xinhua reported.
The epicentre was located in Maru township in Baqen county. Lhawang Dagpo, the township’s deputy head, said the tremor was clearly felt at the township office, where cracks appeared in the walls, according to Xinhua.
Power and telecommunications services were disrupted in the county seat, the agency reported.
Earthquakes are relatively common in China. In January 2025, at least 126 people were killed when a powerful earthquake struck rural Tingri county in Tibet.
