Over 500 Tibetan refugees have Nepali citizenship; five including gang leader arrested

KATHMANDU, March 23: The police have arrested a gang active in providing Nepali citizenship certificates to more than 500 Tibetans.

The Metropolitan Police Crime Division arrested five people including Krishna Bahadur Katuwal, the gang’s leader who granted Nepali citizenship to Tibetans in Babarmahal area of Kathmandu.

"We started an investigation after receiving a complaint saying that documents, stamps and signatures of government offices were manipulated by manipulation of a certain amount of money and fake documents and fake recommendations were given to non-Nepali people to obtain Nepali citizenship certificates," the department said, "Five people including Krishna Bahadur Katuwal were arrested from Babarmahal on Monday.'

The police also recovered fake citizenship certificates from them, educational certificates, driver's licenses, birth certificates, marriage registration certificates, recommendation for divorces, etc.

This gang has succeeded in obtaining citizenship for more than 500 Tibetans from the district administration office in Kathmandu.

The arrested Katuwal is the owner of the canteen. After they were caught, the police started surveillance on the employees of the district administration office, Kathmandu.

It has been revealed that the arrested person, Katuwal, is an absconder who has been convicted of embezzlement and fraud before. The police have discovered that he has granted citizenship certificates to more than 500 people in a period of 5/6 years. According to the police, after the involvement of five other people in this incident, they are still searching for them.

In this case, the police said that the staff of the district administration office of Kathmandu is also involved in providing citizenship certificates to Tibetan refugees.

The police said that investigation has also been started into the former and current employees working in the district administration office Kathmandu on the suspicion of providing citizenship certificates in this way.
