"Bird migration season has kicked off and good thing is that the number of birds coming here has been increasing every year. We are expecting that more birds will land in the coming fifteen days," said Dhungana.
Based on the report of the reserve, the visit by birds like Chakhewa Greater Cormorant, Little Cormorant, and Bar-headed Goose has increased in the reserve this year.
Unlike today, migration of birds in the reserve had nearly ceased after the massive 2008 flooding, which inundated swathes of lands in Sunsari district.
"The migration of birds started to grow three years after the 2008 flooding and it has been improving ever since," said Dhungana. "This increase of bird migration in the reserve is a boon to our natural diversity and good from tourism viewpoint," added Dhunagana.
According to Dhungana, now bird watchers can encounter more than 45 species of birds within an hour of travelling inside the park.
Nepal is home to a total of 871 bird species and more than 200 species depend on wetlands. There are a total of 493 bird species in the Koshi Tapu Wild Life Reserve alone.
