KATHMANDU, July 5: The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has pledged to get rid of overcrowding at transport management offices and also to end the involvement of middlemen soon.

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has decided to provide services through electronic means for renewing driver's license, adding categories, and re-apply for those who have previously applied but were not successful.

“As soon as I took over the responsibility of this ministry, I decided to end the problem of overcrowding and the involvement of middlemen in the transport management offices. We have made arrangements for application for new licenses, renewal of old ones, addition of vehicle class and payment of revenue through online medium,” said Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport,  Prakash Jwala, while inaugurating the online service from Pokhara of Gandaki Province.

According to the minister, the government will start providing online services from the transport offices across the country within a month.

“Once the online service starts, one will only have to go to the transport management office only for biometrics, written test and trial,” added Jwala.

Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, director general of the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), said  arrangements will be made for health examination by the doctors appointed by the provincial ministry and the DoTM.

In Nepal, the government has issued driving licenses to around 3,360,000 individuals. They will no longer have to stand in serpentine queue at the transport management offices for renewal of license and addition of driving categories. According to the ministry, the license renewal will also be held in 10 years from now onward.
