KATHMANDU, Aug 28: Police on Saturday seized 40 government cars and 29 motorcycles used by state authorities without prior consent from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA).

Acting on instructions issued by MoHA, police were mobilized across the country from early Saturday morning to check whether there were vehicles with government number plates out on the streets.[break]

As per MoHA regulations, government offices including ministries, departments or any other agencies cannot use state vehicles on public holidays without passes issued by MoHA.

"The ministry instructed police to check and take control of government vehicles found being used on this public holiday [Saturday] without passes issued by MoHA," said Home Secretary Leela Mani Paudyal , adding, "Our objective is to curb reckless misuse of government vehicles on public holidays."

On Saturday alone, police seized 15 government number plate cars and 20 motorcycles in Kathmandu Valley. They seized 5 government cars from the eastern region, 2 cars from central region, 18 cars and 5 motorcycles from the western region, 3 motorcycles from mid-western region and 1 motorcycle from the far western region. The largest numbers of cars were seized from the western region.

In Kathmandu, police seized 35 vehicles. MoHA has decided to continue with the move.

MoHA has long been receiving complaints about misuse of government vehicles even on public holidays. "Using government vehicles on public holidays means misuse not only of vehicles but also other government resources like fuel and drivers," said a MoHA source, adding," Most government officials reportedly use government vehicles on public holidays for personal and family purposes." Civil servants also use government four wheelers to ferry articles from one place to another.

MoHA makes CDOs´ cell numbers public

In a bid to enhance public access to the chief district officers, MoHA has made public the mobile numbers of its secretary, joint secretaries, senior officials and all chief district officers (CDOs). MoHA made the mobile numbers public through its website---www.moha.gov.np.

"To date, the public has had to put up with a lot to get into contact with CDOs and other MoHA officials even when they are in an urgent situation," said Secretary Paudyal, adding, "We decided to make public the mobile numbers of senior MoHA officials and CDOs with the objective of helping maintain law and order throughout the country, thereby resolving problems facing many Nepalis."

The last four digits of the mobile numbers of all CDOs are same 7777.
