Mixed results for Nepal in Olympiad

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Nepal has produced mixed results in the ongoing 42th Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan on Tuesday. 

Nepal played 2-2 draw in both men’s and women’s events against South Korea and Botswana and earned 2 points each from both events. In the men’s event, Bilam Lal Shrestha, rated 2017, continued his winning streak beating 2111 rated Sehyun Kwon in the 33th move and added three match points. 

Similarly, 2034 rated Sajin Maharjan defeated 2025 rated Yongjoon Chon in the 33th move to add two personal points and is now a step closer to earn Candidate Master Award. However, Keshav Shrestha lost to 2238 rated Jun Hyeok Lee in the 53th move. In the same event, Bhupendra Niraula, who is rated 2072, also faced a defeat as he gave up against Kim Saebyeok in the 35th move. 

Likewise in the women’s event, Monalisha Khamboo registered her first victory in the Olympiad as she overcame Mabedi Mbo in the 33th move. Sujana Lohani beat Khumo Mooketsi in the 23rd move. In the same event 1632 rated Ashmita Adhikari faced defeat to Onkemetse Francis in the 49th move and Shanta Thapa lost to Thapelo Francis. 

Nepal will now face Malta and Ireland in the men’s and women’s events in the fifth round.
