POKHARA, Jan 23: Krishna Thapa from Hetauda has won the chess competition organized on the occasion of the Pokhara Festival. Thapa who secured 5.5 points to clinch the title got a cash prize of Rs 25 thousand, medal and certificate.

In the war of Kurukshetra battle troops were tabulated on the unit of “Akshauhini”. One “akshauhini” comprised of 500,000 warriors, 21,870 chariots and elephants each, 65,610 horses and 109,350 infantry. The ideal ratio, thus, in one “akshauhini” is one chariot: one elephant: three cavalry: five infantry soldiers. Emulating this very structure, an ancient strategic game by name of Chaturanga developed in the Indian subcontinent. It employed the use of small figurines to represent the elephants, chariots, cavalry, and infantry and was played on checkered boards of eight by eight grid.

KATHMANDU, March 20: Sumit Panta of Nepal stunned IM Abu Sufian Shakil of Bangladesh in the Asian Zonal 3.2 Chess Championship that kicked off on Sunday in the capital.

KATHMANDU, March 16: The Asian Zonal 3.2 Chess Championship, which is also the qualifiers for Chess World Cup, is set to be held in Kathmandu from March 18 to 28. The tournament being hosted by Nepal Chess Association (NCA) will feature players from South Asian nations including host Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Maldives. This is the second time Nepal is hosting this tournament after holding the same event two years ago in Kathmandu.
