KATHMANDU, May 25: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Uma Regmi has said a process has begun to remove the statute of limitations for filing a claim against sexual assaults.

Receiving a memorandum by a delegation of the Sambridhi Foundation Nepal here today, the Minister assured of the repeal of the time limit for the first information report (FIR) in cases of sexual violence against women. The memo demands that there should be no time limit for seeking justice for sexual assault against women and girls and it is a must for minimizing such offences.

The minister hoped that amendments to the law regarding rape would further strengthen the justice delivery mechanism to survivor by bringing the perpetrator under the purview of law.

The memo has sought prompt removal of the statute of limitations for FIR in cases of sexual violence, justice to survivors through a fast-track and prompt amendment to the relevant laws.

Foundation Chair Sangita Shrestha demanded the guarantee of the rights of minors, adolescents and women to a free and safe environment.

As per the current legal provisions, an FIR against sexual assaults has to be filed within a year of such assaults.
