KATHMANDU, June 27: Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai has underscored the need for the disable-friendly information and technology centers in the country.

At a program jointly organized by National Federation of Disabled- Nepal, Nepal Disabled Women Association (NDWA) and Nepal Telecom here today, Minister Rai shared that the Ministry of Information and Communications had already initiated preparations for the same.

Rai, who is also the Spokesperson of the government, reiterated, "The Ministry, after consulting with the stakeholders, is preparing a master plan to set up disable-friendly information and technology centers."

Minister Rai also shared that efforts were underway to ensure everyone's access to information and technology that he believed would help ensure the right to information stipulated in the new constitution.

Rai was quick to add that the new national statute was disable-friendly to a large extent.

Furthermore, the newly unveiled government's policies, programs and budget for fiscal year 2016/017 has also incorporated programs targeting this very section of population.

Also speaking at the program, Chief Information Commissioner Krishna Hari Banskota pointed out the need to emphasize programs that would build capacity, skills and leadership qualities in the differently-able people.

Joint-Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare Shankar Pathak spoke of the need for the Ministry to broadcast news in sign language more than a single time in a week as the state-owned television is doing currently.

Director General of Department of Information Raghuram Bista, Director of the Nepal Telecom Anandaram Khanal, Chairperson of NDWA Nirmala Dhital among others univocally underlined that the differently-able one should also have access to information and technology. RSS
