Issuing a press statement on Friday, Nepal´s Permanent Mission in Geneva said that Minister Ghimire appreciated the role played by the UNHCR in providing the upkeep and maintenance of the Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. [break]
"Reiterating Nepal’s commitment to finding a solution to the problem, the Minister underlined that lasting solution lies in the voluntary and safe repatriation of the refugees to their homeland with dignity and honour. He reiterated that Nepal has always respected the rights of refugees on humanitarian grounds," the statement said.
While expressing gratitude to Nepal for generously hosting a large number of refugees for a long period of time, the High Commissioner for Refugees appreciated the cooperation of the Government of Nepal in finding durable solution to the problem, the statement said.
During the meeting High Commissioner, Antonio, concurred that voluntary repatriation is the best solution. "Contemporary refugee issues and cooperation between Nepal and UNHCR on refugee related matters were also discussed," reads the statement.
Minister Ghimire led a Nepali delegation to the High Level Segment of the Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council held on July 1-4 in Geneva. Some six months ago, Nepal was elected as a member of the ECOSOC for the period 2013-2015. He held a meeting with Unite Nation´s Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon while staying in Geneva. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Ghimire, is scheduled to back home on Saturday morning.
