Midas CAN SofTech 2011 kicks off

KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The fourth edition of Midas CAN SofTech 2011 was officially inaugurated on Thursday at DECC Hall, World Trade Center, Tripureshwor. Minister for Information and Communications Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta inaugurated the four-day long software exhibition.



Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Minister Gupta expressed commitment to work toward expanding communication infrastructure. [break]



“The private sector has contributed a lot in the development of ICT sector and if the government can contribute to the development of infrastructure, the software industry will get a boost,” he added.



Chhatra Hari Karki, MD of title sponsor of the event Midas Technologies, said that the use of technology could be made to bridge the education gap between urban and rural areas.



The four-day long event features 63 stalls of 40 different organizations, including three software companies from India.



Software companies are exhibiting several services related to office and household at the event. Software of office systems, accounting, banking, educational software, software training institutes were able to grab the attention of visitors in the first day of the event.



Although the exhibition is more focused on branding of companies and informing visitors about new developments in the software sector, some of the companies are also offering lucrative discount on their services.



Sudip Phuyal, assistant manager of one of the participating stalls -- OKnepal, Inc said that he the curiosity of visitors overwhelmed him.







OKnepal is offering up to 60 percent discount on domain registration and webhosting. The original price of the service is Rs 5,000 but during CAN Softech it is being available at Rs 2,000 only.



Ebuzz!asia- local search engine is giving away 50 percent off on registration charge for registration on local business segment throughout the event.

Number of visitors was higher at the stall of anti-virus as well. Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Eset Anti-Virus and BitDefender Anti-Virus are some of the brands available at the event. Silvercrest Network, authorized distributor of Eset unveiled the latest version of anti-virus on Thursday.



Apart from the exhibition of software, the event also features workshops. Workshop of e-NGO in association with Digital Empowerment Foundation India is scheduled for Friday.

Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) is organizing the event since 2007 with the aim of providing a platform to local software developers and educate visitors about developments in software industry.







The four-day long event targets footfall of 50,000 visitors. Narayan Neupane, General Secretary of CAN said that 8, 772 visited the event on Thursday.



“Our previous experience was that there were usually few turnovers on the first day of the event but this time around visitors´ participation has been encouraging,” he said. He said the organizers were hopeful of meeting the target in the next three days.
