Medical college faces locals' ire

CHITWAN, May 2: The campaign to move the College of Medical Sciences away from the archeologically and environmentally sensitive area of Bageshwari Jungle in Chitwan has been launched once again.

Disregarding a Supreme Court order on April 29, 1996, to remove the college from the forest area, the college is still functioning in the forest area.

The current campaign is being carried out by the Bageshwori Preservation Committee of Devghat. The committee padlocked the library of the college on Friday demanding that it dismantle its physical structures right away. The college has its hostel and library in the forest area.

The college has disregarded eight notices given by the District Forest Office in the past 13 years to shift away from the forest.

There is fear among the protesters that the current campaign will also fail like in the past.

“Previously the campaign failed because the campaigners were bought by the college authority. We will not let that happen this time,” says Krishna Prasad Subedi, deputy chairman of the committee.
