KATHMANDU, June 19: The B&C Teaching Hospital owned by Durga Prasain in Jhapa has finally been granted affiliation as a medical college. The hospital received affiliation as a medical college after the Medical Education Commission (MED) decided to grant it the affiliation on Tuesday.
The 14th meeting of the MED was held in Baluwatar on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The MED’s co-chairpersons, Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Yadav, and Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Sumana Shrestha, also participated in the meeting.

The meeting decided to grant affiliation for medical education to B&C Teaching Hospital by implementing the Supreme Court’s order. It is reported that PM Dahal also emphasized on granting affiliation to a hospital as a medical college.
On March 25, a joint bench of Justices Kumar Chudal and Saranga Subedi issued an order to grant affiliation to B&C Hospital as a medical college. However, Nepali orthopedic surgeon and philanthropic activist, Professor Dr Govinda KC has been demanding judicial review, claiming that the Supreme Court’s order was flawed.
The Supreme Court issued an order in the name of Kathmandu University and MED on May 27 to grant affiliation to B&C Teaching Hospital within 15 days. Following the order, Kathmandu University’s executive committee meeting held on June 9 sent a letter of recommendation to the MED to grant affiliation.
