KATHMANDU, July 19: The government is preparing to send 14 employees, who are not related to market inspection and monitoring, to attend the Food Inspection Training being held in China from the first week of August.

A source at the Department of Commerce and Supply Management (DoCSM) said 14 employees -- seven each from the department and the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies (MoCS) -- have been selected for the training. "The selected employees are not involved in any inspection and monitoring activities," the source added.Stating that employees close to high-ranking government officials have been selected for the training, the source said employees involved in inspection and monitoring activities on a regular basis have been overlooked.

The source said some of the employees selected for the training had refused to go for marketing monitoring and inspection earlier. "This is very embarrassing. Only those appeasing the minister and the secretary have been selected for the training," the source said, adding, "Such decision will only discourage employees who are involved in market monitoring and activities."

When Republica reached Shambhu Koirala, director general of DoCSM, for comments, Koirala said he was not aware the training and employees selected for the purpose. "No decision has been taken on the issue so far," he added.
