BIRGUNJ, Jan 8: Cadres of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) vandalized a vehicle belonging to Nepal Republic Media, the publishing house of Republica and Nagarik dailies, on Thursday night.

The cadres stopped the van of registration plate Ba 5 Cha 8690 at Nighgarah of Bara while returning after delivering newspapers in Janakpur and pelted stones on it.

“They threw stones more aggressively after knowing that the van carried Nagarik,” driver Rajan Samari said. “I halted the vehicle after a stone breaks the front glass.”

Samari also informed that the cadres tried to continue vandalizing even after he said it belonged to ‘press’. “The group was even shouting that driver should also be beaten,” he added. “They retreated when the armed police force arrived.”

Maoists closed down Bara, Parsa and Rautahat on Thursday in protest of the killing of Maoist cadres on Wednesday night. The Maoists had announced that they would allow press vehicles, ambulances and vehicles of diplomatic missions to move.
