KATHMANDU, Dec 23: The Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) will not disrupt the proceedings of the parliament from Wednesday onwards, deputy parliamentary leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha said after a meeting of the party. [break]

Earlier, chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had told speaker Subash Nemwang and leaders of other party about not disrupting House in a meeting.

“We have unilaterally decided not to disrupt the Parliament anymore,” Shrestha said after the party’s meeting at Singha Durbar. “However, we will continue our struggle to re-establish civilian supremacy through alternative ways in the parliament.”

He however did not explain the alternative ways and said: “We are discussing about it.”

Earlier, in a meeting called by Nemwang to discuss the disruptions in the parliament and delay in the draft preparation by some of the thematic committee of the Constituent Assembly owing to conflict between parties, Dahal said that the Maoists ‘would unilaterally allow the parliament run.’

The Maoist lawmakers have disrupted the proceeding in the House since August demanding the re-establishment of civilian supremacy. They however allowed the parliament to function for three days to pass the budget.

The meeting was attended by Dahal, vice-chairs Narayan Kaji Shreshta and Dr Baburam Bhattarai of Maoists, Ram Chandra Poudel of Nepali Congress and Jhala Nath Khanal of CPN-UML among others.

The parliament is scheduled to meet on Wednesday afternoon at 1530 NST.
