BIRATNAGAR, Sept 14: Maoist cadres disrupted the fourth convocation of the Purvanchal University on Monday. Police used force against the Maoists who were demonstrating against Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and helped conduct the ceremony. [break]
The Maoist cadres also exchanged stones with the police. Biratnagar was tense for sometime due to the Maoist protest. Police said Maoist cadres damaged a police vehicle and four other vehicles.PM, who is also the Chancellor of Purvanchal University, urged the university officials to achieve special expertise in education sector through fair competition.
Earlier, police had rained lathis on the protestors and fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
A total of 877 students are scheduled to take part in the convocation. A large number of guardians have also gathered in Biratnagar.
Meanwhile, our Itahari correspondent reported that PM Madhav Nepal inspected the building of the College of Medical and Allied Sciences of the university at Mrigauliya-9 of Morang.
Talking briefly with the media after inspecting the building, the prime minister said the bitterness among the political parties won’t end unless the political leaders stop shun the attitude of verbal attack on each other.

The PM said the Maoist leaders have developed a bad culture of insulting leaders of other political parties with mean works of late.
He said he has been trying to create environment in which the leaders stop verbally abusing others.
On the occasion, the PM said the Purvanchal University should be operated as per the objectives with which it was established. The PM also planted trees on the premises of the college. He also acquired information about the main academic building, OPD department and administrative building.

Director of the PU project Dr Narayan Kumar briefed the PM on the status of the project.
Minister for Education Ram Chandra Kushwaha also acquired information about the progress of the university.
Senior officer of the university Narayan Prasad Dahal informed that nine modern building have been constructed on the premises of the university for which the government’s Rs 260 million was spent.

The college of medical and allied science is spread in over 80 bigahas of land while the university is spread in 805 bigahas of land.
The college will enroll 100 students every year while the hospital will be operated in full capacity from next year. The hospital will initially have 300 beds.
The PM and education minister were here before heading to Biratnagar to take part in the convocation ceremony of the university.
