Locals pelt stones at Biratnagar customs office following cyclist’s death in accident

BIRATNAGAR, Oct 4: Locals of Biratnagar hurled stones and bricks at the Biratnagar Customs Office located in Biratnagar Metropolitan City-18, following the tragic death of a cyclist in a collision with a truck.


The cyclist was killed in the collision with the truck in front of the customs office on Thursday evening. In response, locals pelted stones at the customs office today. After the vandalism attempt, the police fired 10 tear gas canisters to control the situation.

The truck (Na 4 Kha 2483) en route to the Integrated CheckPoint in Biratnagar, hit Shyam Shah, 60, who was going in the same direction on a bicycle.


He was seriously injured in the collision and died while being rushed to the hospital. Locals protest on Friday stating that the accident occurred due to the high speed of the truck.


Similarly, families of the deceased have refused to receive the dead body stating that the accident was caused by the negligence of the truck driver. DSP Bed Prakash Joshi of District Police Office, Morang, said that on Friday morning, the aggressive crowd targeted the customs office and pelted stones.


There has been minor damage to the customs gate and building from the stone-pelting incident.
