Maoist trade union withdraws strike for a week

KATHMANDU, Dec 29: Following an agreement between Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Federation of Nepalese Journalists on Sunday, the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Communication and Printing Publication Workers Union (ANCPPWU) has halted its strike at Kantipur Publication Biratnagar office for a week, the ANCPPWU Biratnagar sub-committee said in a statement.

On Sunday, the minister had reached an agreement with FNJ that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal would pledge to the parliament his commitment to press freedom and security; 25 political parties would make a similar pledge; and the Home Ministry would issue circular to district administration for taking action against violators of press freedom.
