KATHMANDU, Feb 25: A Maoist taskforce headed by Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai formed to recommend the model of future government in the new constitution has suggested to the party to adopt executive presidential system. [break]

"We have suggested to the party to adopt a mixed system in which the president will be executive head of the country and the prime minister will have limited authority," Bhattarai told journalists.

When asked if such a model will lead the party toward authoritarianism, Bhattarai claimed that would not happen because the proposed system is like that of France and Sri Lanka where prime minister also enjoys certain powers.

The manifesto put forth by the Maoist party during the last year´s Constituent Assembly polls too advocated a presidential model.

The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has consistently opposed to the presidential model saying this will lead to an authoritarian system. NC advocates for a parliamentary system with executive prime minister and ceremonial president.
