KATHMANDU, May 18: The meeting between top leaders of the Unified CPN (Maoist) and Nepali Congress on current political deadlock and extension of the Constituent Assembly tenure ended inconclusively Tuesday.

Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Vice-President Mohan Baidya and Chief Whip Post Bahadur Bogati represented the Maoist side in the meeting that took place at Vaishali Hotel.[break]

Acting President Sushil Koirala, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel were the Congress representatives in the meeting.

After the meeting, Dahal said that Congress leaders did not agree on the Maoist demand for the prime minister’s resignation and a return to the consensus system for government.

Dahal reiterated that CA term extension is impossible unless constitution-drafting is guaranteed.

He said the meeting also discussed integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants. He said the number of fighters to be integrated into the Nepal Army cannot be fixed now as demanded by the NC and other ruling parties.

Poudel said they tried to find a way out of the present crisis through a package deal and dwelt on extension of the CA tenure and other issues but no agreement was reached.
