Maoist leader Amala Roka held over alleged role in 61-kg gold smuggling

Tshering, who reportedly built ties with Maoist leaders after marrying Roka, is linked to the smuggled gold recovered from Tribhuvan International Airport in July 2023.

KATHMANDU, June 20: Amala Roka, a fugitive and Maoist leader from Rolpa, has been arrested in Kathmandu for her alleged involvement in the 61-kg gold smuggling case. Married to Belgian national Dawa Tshering, Roka is accused of aiding the smuggling network, and INTERPOL had issued a diffusion notice against her.


Tshering, who reportedly built ties with Maoist leaders after marrying Roka, is linked to the smuggled gold recovered from Tribhuvan International Airport in July 2023. Roka is also connected to a controversial helicopter trip to Gosainkunda in 2020 with three Chinese nationals and Dipesh Pun, son of former Vice President Nanda Kishor Pun.

Despite previous police operations targeting Chinese nationals involved in cybercrime, Tshering allegedly evaded arrest due to political connections. He had also acquired Nepali citizenship from Kavre.
