“There are serious differences between our party and the Maoists, which has been playing a dual and contradictory role. We believe that the Maoists should not take steps that would render the Constituent Assembly useless,” said MPRF Co-Chairman Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta. He said differences have surfaced as recent Maoist activities are not in the interest of peace and constitution writing. [break]
Stating that the alliance was formed to ensure peace and constitution writing, Gupta said, “Maoists do not want to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly. This has hurt us.”
Urging the Maoists to revoke the decision to announce constitution on May 15, he said, “Maoist decision not to help extend the CA term until the prime minister steps down is irresponsible.”
Talking to media persons at his party´s parliamentary office in Singha Durbar on Wednesday, he said, “Now the ball is in the court of the Maoists.” He also expressed his concern over bill tabled by the government to amend the Interim Constitution as his party and other opposition parties were not consulted.
´5000 combatants for integration´
Gupta, who was a senior minister in the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led cabinet, said Dahal had told India that some 5,000 combatants would be integrated. “He had even told the special committee that only 7,000 combatants would be integrated,” Gupta claimed.
