KATHMANDU, March 13: Maldivian Minister for Youth and Sports Mohamed Hussain Shareef on Tuesday said that his country would have all necessary physical infrastructures to host South Asian Games (SAG) within five years.

Revealing that there is no athletics track and swimming pool in Maldives, Shareef said such physical infrastructures would be constructed in his country within five years. “We are planning to host the regional sports fiesta in different islands,” said Shareef whose country is made up of 1192 coral islands.[break]

"We are backward in physical infrastructure but have started building the necessary infrastructure targeting to host SAG within five years,” said Shareef, adding, “We have not been able to host SAG until the 11th edition and it is impossible to organize a mega event without proper infrastructure.”

Maldives and Sri Lanka had jointly hosted SAFF Championship in 2008 and South Asian Cricket Championship in 2011.

Shareef also declared that Maldives will host Second Beach South Asian Games next year to get the experience of hosting mega event. "The events to be included in the Beach Games are yet to be decided."
