Make everyday â€˜Sundaeâ€™

KATHMANDU, Oct 21: Everyone wants to go somewhere but they can’t decide what they’re in the mood for. Here is an ideal place that gives you a vast array of options to choose ranging from a traditional Newari Thali to ice-creams or a hot chocolate fudge.

Sundae Café ‘n’ Bar, located next to the zoo parking in Jawlakhel, opens seven days a week from 7 am to 9:30 pm and boasts being the first sundae spot in Jawlakhel area.[break]

“We’ve decorated it differently,” says Madan Krishna Maharjan, proprietor, who worked at Baskin ‘n’ Robbins before opening it.

A quick peek into the ice cream parlor leaves you clueless about the rest of the vicinity, but passing through a hallway will lead you into the garden with lush green grass and chairs to sun lounge. Behind the lawn is the bar that has an open terraced upstairs overlooking the zoo’s bird sanctuary.

In another building a couple of paces away, a set of wooden stairs leads you into a few different coffee and lounge bars. There are also couches and a few more tables here and there on the verandah.

If you want something more traditional, the attic with its straw carpet provides you a perfect local Newari place to sprawl in a chair and look at the menu. The menu is bound to satiate any food craving you have.

With your options ranging from Chinese, Indian, Newari, to Continental, you will not be disappointed at all. Maharjan says one of their most popular dishes is the Newari Thali, which makes an excellent hot dish of the day, which is not lacking in taste or texture.

If that’s not enough, every Friday from 5 pm to 8:30 pm, Sundae hosts a BBQ fiesta. For Rs 225, you can enjoy chicken in the garden or if you are a vegetarian, a plate of potatoes served on request may satisfy you.

Of course, being true to its name, Sundae specializes in sundaes. A hit from the ice-cream menu is the Oreo Cookie Sundae that is laden with vanilla and chocolate ice-cream topped with chocolate syrup, cashews, whipped cream, a cherry and of course Oreos.

Seeing as Sundae also has ‘café’ in the name it wouldn’t be complete with coffee. Sundae also offers caffeinated beverages brewed with beans from Lavazza.

Stopping by for lunch or ice-cream, Sundae is a perfect peaceful getaway from the humdrum life of Jawlakhel. With reasonable prices and an atmosphere that is friendly to students as well as families, this is a place that will make you wish everyday was sundae!
