Maha-aarati to Lord Shiva

According to the Babadham Committee, more than 20,000 pilgrims visited the Pindeshwar Temple only last Monday to offer holy water from the Koshi River in Chatara.

Pindeshwar Mahadev Temple in Bijayapur of Dharan holds a prominent place in the lives of Shiva devotees. Not only people of Dharan, but also devotees from across the country throng the temple to offer prayers to Lord Shiva during the month of Shrawan.

The month of Shrawan is considered to be the favorite month of Lord Shiva and Monday as his favorite day. Devotees fetch holy water from the Koshi River to offer it to the Pindeshwar Mahadev every Monday. To keep Shiva happy, Pindeshwar Babadham Committee has been organizing the Maha-aarati on Sunday evenings as well as Monday mornings and evenings. The Babadham Committee stated that this Maha-aarati has added to the temple’s
magnificence.

In addition, the committee also believes that the Maha-aarati has been able to attract religious tourists in hoards.

As many as five Nepali priests, who were called from Varanasi of India, have been performing the Maha-aarati. Conducting Maha-aarati of Lord Shiva during the month of Shrawan is an age-old tradition in Ganga and Kaushiki rivers, in Varanasi.

This year, the Babadham Committee has arranged for devotees to make a pledge of Rs 1,100 during the Maha-aarati. “The arrangement as well as the turnover has been so overwhelming this year that were are planning to make the Maha-aarati grander in the forthcoming years,” said Jayant Gautam, Chancellor of the Babadham Committee.

As per the tradition, devotees travel to Chatara on foot on Sundays to bring water from the Koshi River during midnight and offer it to Lord Shiva at the Pindeshwar Temple on Monday mornings. But, breaking with tradition, devotees now-a-days offer water at the temple on Sunday nights.
According to the Babadham Committee, more than 20,000 pilgrims visited the Pindeshwar Temple only last Monday to offer holy water from the Koshi River in Chatara. The number of visitors is excluding local devotees.

There is a description of Lord Shiva at the Pindeshwar Temple in the Himadri sector of 'Skanda Mahapurana' in 'Rudraksha Mahatmaya'. It is said that the remainings of the immortal potion (Amrit) drank by the Lords is established in the shape of Pinda (offering to the dead). Because Pindeshwar is a site where rudraksha was originated, it is also known as Rudraksharaniya area.
