KATHMANDU, Jan 28: Perverts tend to live in their own paradise. Especially the ones with some education, wealth and grip on power. Madan Rai, who has recently come to the fore after his conviction by Khotang District Court on January 23, is a celebrity among such a sludge-soaked personality. He has sexually violated students and has abused them with words. His obscenity and perversion, both in action and words, has at times sunk so low that the very word ashamed would tremble with shame when confronted with this sage of perversion. Several news outlets have obtained videos that show him undressing before a group of girl students at a program and a video where a student is seen massaging his naked body.
Rai, who is also the founder of Subhadra Madan Foundation, however, has no regrets about what he has done and how he has ruined the lives of those innocent girls. On the contrary, he maintains that his actions are in line with more progressive, liberal ideology and that Nepali people, much behind in enlightenment, are not yet ready to embrace the sexual liberation he is so generously offering them. That, to put it more in line with his language, he is far ahead of the time. In an interview with Setopati, he had been quoted as saying, “I have been saying that there should be free sex to ensure that there are no rapes.” What he means by ‘free sex’ can be understood by the scars he had left on the lives of the child victims.

Pedophiles like Madan Rai, unfortunately, are many in number. A few years ago, a series of reports by media outlets exposed teachers who had been abusing students, some as young as nine to ten years. According to one report, a teacher at Lalitpur Madhyamik Vidhyalaya thrust his hand inside a nine-year-old student’s tunic, rubbed her thigh and occasionally reached up to her private parts. Numerous more reports show family members, usually stepfathers and distant uncles, exploiting the vulnerable underage girls. What is common in most cases, however, is that these perpetrators have the audacity to claim that what they have done is not wrong at all.
Pedophiles and perverts often operate from authoritative positions. This lends them the power and influence to silence their victims. Such a pattern can be discerned not only in our country but also in European and American nations. Consider, for instance, the scandalous exposure by the New York Times about Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries. Besides, the directors and producers of Hollywood like Jeffry Epstein, who has become a modern synonym for pedophiles, had also been in a position of immense power. In any case, it is of great importance to protect our innocent children, especially girls, from the beastial claws of the perverts.
The Government of Nepal has been making efforts to keep these perverts, who so confidently wallow in their sludgy paradise, from roaming freely in the streets and places where our children deserve to live safely. The court’s verdict on Rai itself has been welcomed by the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens as a benchmark for prosecuting pedophiles in Nepal. “Madan Rai’s conviction sends a clear message to the pedophiles in Nepal: try it and you will land in our laws’ net,” the ministry’s Spokesperson Chakra Bahadur Budha told Republica.
