"The problem has surfaced as the five or six top political leaders want to become the next prime minister," Bhattarai said while speaking at a function in Tankinsinwari on the outskirt of Biratnagar. He did not name the leaders. [break]
The Maoist vice-chairman was of the view that most of the political problems would be solved once the top leaders stop hankering after power, and declare that they don´t want the post of prime minister.
"Many were restless when the buzz about me becoming the prime minister made the rounds. My goodness, I declared that I did not want to be. I said so because there were already five or six leaders in the race, and I would not want to make things more complicated by joining the race as yet another candidate," he said.
Bhattarai said the country would get a new constitution and the peace process would reach a logical conclusion within the next seven months if the political parties form a national consensus government and work for peace and constitution.
"I also hope that a national consensus government would be formed for the sake of peace and constitution," he said adding that the country slipped into the present crisis due to the existing constitutional provision of a majority-based government, instead of a consensus-based one.
Bhattarai also said the country has been taken hostage by the conflict between those for slow change and those for radical change, and advocated a middle path for the betterment of the country.
"If we walk fast, we will have the risk of falling down. And if we walk too slowly, other countries will be far ahead than us," he said.
