In the far-western districts, menstruating and post-natal women are banished from their houses and are left alone to live in the sheds. [break[
The local women have joined hands against the practice as women have died of snakebite, hypothermia and severe bleeding while practicing chaupadi.
“We have already pulled down more than three dozens chaupadi sheds,” said Dipa Karmi, a local.
Likewise, Sanja Kami, a local, said the local women launched this campaign against chaupadi after they were made aware about the adverse health effects of the practice on women. Every year around two dozen women die while observing chaupadi in the far-western region.
“The step taken by the local women is courageous. Women in other neighboring VDCs of the district should also follow suit,” said Yamuna Dutta Joshi, secretary of Jagbuda VDC.
Local women have also been making door-to-door visits asking locals to pull down chaupadi sheds. A majority of homes in inner Tarai of the far-western region have chaupadi sheds.
“Local women have already pulled down a dozen chaupadi sheds. Now, we will not allow this practice to continue,” said Sundar Jairu, president of NNDSW, a non-government organization.
