Thousands of students in Nepal received their SEE results recently. With their examinations behind them, students may now be thinking about their options for 11th and 12th grades, which are widely viewed as the most important years in their academic journey. The choice of academic stream in these grades can significantly impact their future. While some students may already have a clear path in mind, others may still be exploring their options. It's perfectly normal to feel uncertain about which stream to choose. Although it may seem like a simple transition to another class, the progression from 10th to 11th grade is monumental in a student’s life. Students are presented with various streams, subjects, and courses to choose from. They need to take a holistic approach and thoughtfully decide on their academic path for 11th grade, as it will have a lasting impact on their future.

It is important one first analyzes what strengths one possesses, and in which career path or stream one’s interest lies. But simply having an interest in a stream is not sufficient,  students need to decide whether or not they have the aptitude and skills that the subject demands. So when it comes to deciding what to study in higher classes the decision should not be taken hastily, students should consult their parents, teachers and career counselors and ruminate about all the options laid out in front of them. For a successful career, careful planning is a must, so students should give it plenty of time so that they will not face any problems in the future.

Proper knowledge and understanding of the streams and courses are extremely crucial. Students need to be clear about all the subjects that are part of the stream of their choice so that they can play to their strengths and come up with a decision.

Science

The science stream has traditionally been a popular choice for many students, as it offers a wide range of opportunities. It includes various subjects that allow students to explore diverse areas of interest and provides numerous career pathways. For instance, students opting for physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science can pursue careers in engineering, software development, and defense services. Those choosing physics, chemistry, and biology often aspire to work in the medical field, with additional options such as physiotherapy, agriculture, nutrition dietetics, and marine biology also available.

Management

Students who enjoy playing with numbers and are passionate about economics, monetary affairs, business transactions and the stock market are inclined towards the management stream. The core subjects in the management stream are– economics, accountancy, business studies and math. Although math is not a required subject and can be replaced with an optional subject choice like social science. Management offers a myriad of career options for the students in the future; some would be interested in starting their businesses and becoming entrepreneurs. Other options include chartered accountant, financial banking, stockbroker, banking and insurance and much more. 

Humanities

A student with an introspective creative mind and great communication skills is likely to gravitate towards the humanities stream. Nowadays, many students are opting for the humanities stream due to its diversified, exciting and interesting career scopes. The core subjects that make up the humanities stream are sociology, history, psychology, literature, political science, philosophy and fine arts. There is a wide range of career options for humanities students in the future, such as media and journalism, literature, social work, product designing, psychology, and teaching. 

In addition to selecting the right subjects and streams, students should focus on self-improvement, personality development, and acquiring new skills to thrive in today's competitive world. A student’s life undergoes a significant transformation after the 10th grade as they gradually transition into adulthood. They need to stay mindful of their environment and the challenges that lie ahead, enabling them to navigate the fast-paced and cutthroat career sectors. Developing communication skills, learning a new language, or pursuing a new hobby during holidays can be beneficial for students and it is a good utilization of time. Additionally, staying updated with global events through newspapers, journals, and news websites fosters critical thinking. Whether opportunities arise unexpectedly or demand diligent pursuit, students should work on them with utmost dedication to create a successful future for themselves.
