Leaving cantonment with arms violates CPA: UNMIN chief

BIRATNAGAR, Aug 25: The incident of Maoist combatants coming out of the cantonment in Kavilvastu violated the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in presence of the United Nations in 2006, a top UN official said here on Tuesday morning. [break]



Altogether 24 armed combatants came out of the UN-monitored Krishnasen Memorial Brigade based in Kapilvastu district on Monday. They were later arrested by the police.



Talking to civil society members and human rights community here, Chief of the United Nation Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Karin Landgren said that the incident of the armed combatants deserting the cantonment against the peace process. She further said that the combatants cannot take out the arms meant for security of the cantonment.



She added that the incident would be discussed in the Joint Monitoring Coordinating Committee which has the representatives of Maoists, army and the UNMIN.



In a separate context, Landgren also requested all to cooperate the government to implement the Special Security plan aimed at improving law and order situation in Nepal.
