KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Cross-party leaders have agreed not to include a statute of limitations in corruption cases in the Bill to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059.

The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives, in a meeting held on Friday, unanimously decided to reject the proposed provision to limit the investigation of corruption.

Prakash Adhikari, a lawmaker from the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, informed Republica that leaders from all parties decided to remove the proposed five-year statute of limitations.

Earlier, lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Swatantra Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party had also proposed amendments opposing the inclusion of a statute of limitations in corruption cases.

On January 20, 2020, The Corruption Prevention Act amendment bill was registered in the Upper house of parliament. At that time, the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had registered the bill in the National Assembly, and it was passed on June 22, 2020.
