BANKE, June 14: Locals living near the Rapti River and affected by Laxmanpur dam unilaterally constructed by India along the border staged a demonstration in Nepalgunj on Sunday, demanding compensation and long-term solution to the flood problem. India has drawn flak for constructing the dam against international norms.

The locals have demanded a long-term solution to the flooding problem associated with the dam. The agitators gathered at Bankebagiya and held a corner meeting in front of the district administration office.

Addressing hundreds of flood victims present in the meeting, the president of Laxmanpur Dam Struggle Committee, Jagadish Bahadur Singh, said Nepali nationals were being victimized due to India´s hegemony. He said the government should pay immediate attention to this problem.

The victims submitted an eight-point demand to the chief district officer. They have demanded that the River be reverted to its natural course, embankment constructed on both sides, and flood-affected people be resettled, among others.

Some 525 households have been displaced due to the dam while 50,000 people face flooding problems.
