KATHMANDU, Aug 3: The lawmakers from three major political parties on Monday asked government to annul the election process of internationally recognized Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) scheduled for Thursday. The lawmakers made such demand during a meeting of the Parliament at New Baneshwar, Kathmandu.

Dhan Raj Gurung of Nepali Congress, Karna Bahadur Thapa of CPN-UML and Dhaniram Paudel of UCPN-Maoist demanded that the scheduled election of NOC be stopped. The NOC on Saturday issued a notice that the elective general assembly of the body was scheduled for Thrusday.

The lawmakers claimed that the election was against the NOC's own statute and established procedures, and that it would tarnish the image of the country at international level.

Responding to the claims of lawmakers, Speaker of the Parliament Subas Nembang asked Minister of Youth and Sports Purusottam Paudel to furnish clarifications on the dispute related to NOC election during Tuesday's meeting.

Lawmaker Gurung, who is also the chief of sports department of Nepali Congress, claimed that NOC was trying to hold the election against established norms keeping the international bodies (International Olympic Committee and Olympic Council of Asia) under dark. "The NOC has formed parallel bodies of various sports associations for picking representatives of its liking. The major interest of the NOC leadership lies in big financial transactions," Gurung said.

Nine sports association--three authorized by NOC and six other recognized by National Sports Council (NSC), which has separate committees registered at the NOC--on Sunday demanded termination of the election process alleging that it was against the established norms and against the Olympic charter.

Lawmaker Thapa of CPN-UML said that the NOC did not issue any public notice for the election and the nine internationally recognized bodies were against the monopoly of the NOC. He also suspected that the election has been fixed unilaterally to fulfill the vested interest of a faction.

Demanding that the Parliament be informed about the reality, UCPN-Maoist lawmaker Paudel said that the convention was intended to bring in syndicates and drag Nepali sports into controversy.

Court issues stay order against election

The Patan Appellate Court on Wednesday has issued interim stay order against the election process of the internationally recognized Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) scheduled for Thursday.

Responding to a writ petition filed by Narayan Dev Rana, the president of Nepal Wrestling Association, the Appellate Court ordered the NOC not to conduct its general assembly and election until Friday. The court has also summoned NOC with the view to hold discussion between the two sides on Friday as per the writ filed against NOC.
