A CIB team arrested Yadav from Chhauni, Kathamandu on Monday evening.[break]
Police had filed a case at Kathmandu District Court on July 4 after Yadav´s diplomatic passport was found being used by one Kedar Paudel in Australia.
“The police team has succeeded in nabbing him after several attempts,” DIG Upendra Kanta Aryal told Republica. He managed to abscond even though police raided his residences in Kathmandu and his home district of Sarlahi, from where he was elected to the Constituent Assembly (CA) in 2008.
After the arrest, CIB officials sent him to Metropolitan Police Sector, Singha Durbar. “We will first present him in person before the district court. Our next step will depend on the court´s order,” said Aryal.
The CIB informed Speaker Subas Nembang immediately after Yadav was arrested. “Police officials have informed me in writing about his arrest Monday evening,” Nembang told Republica.
Going by immigration details provided by the Australian Embassy, Kedar Paudel has not returned to Nepal.
According to the Passport Act, misuse of passports can lead to up to a one-year jail term. If convicted, the lawmaker would also lose his seat in parliament. Yadav is the fourth lawmaker to be arrested on the same charge.
Earlier, police arrested BP Yadav of MPRF-Republican, Gayatri Sah of Nepali Janta Party and Naradmuni Rana of CPN-UML on the same charge and cases against them are sub-judice in court. The CA membership of all three lawmakers has been suspended. Another lawmaker, DB Karki, was suspended on a corruption charge.
